Tennis Rackets

Every time you hit a tennis ball, the tension of your racket strings decreases slightly and also wears at the string cross points. To help eliminate string breakage the average club player should think about re-string their racket at 3 monthly intervals.

Badminton rackets.

Check the string tension of your racket regularly. Usually, if you are playing 3-4 times a week, you should restring the racket after every 3 months

Types of Tennis strings

The Different Types of Strings Durable Polyesters and Kevlar. Hybrid Strings Sets and Reels. Natural Gut Strings. Soft & Multifilament Polyesters. Synthetic Gut / Nylon Strings. Multifilament Strings. There is always a compromise between playability and durability, with natural gut and multifilament strings being the most playable and Poly strings being the most durable. This has led to the current fashion for combining different strings on the mains (vertical) and crosses (horizontal). The classic example of this is Roger Federer, whose Champions Choice strings consist of a strong poly and natural gut. Rafa Nadal uses a soft poly string all round (Babolat RPM Blast).

String Gauge Guide

  • Generally speaking, thinner strings offer improved playability while thicker strings offer enhanced durability.
  • Tennis string gauges range from 15 (thickest) to 19 (thinnest), with half-gauges identified with an L (15L, 16L, etc), which is short for “light”.
  • Thinner strings also provide more spin potential by allowing the strings to embed into the ball more.
  • Obviously, the thinner the gauge, the more powerful the string, with lots of spin potential. BUT the string will be less durable, but you could allow for that by going for a really thin, durable string.
  • Gauge 15 (1.35 mm) is the standard gauge for tennis.
  • Gauge 16 (1.30 mm) is the most popular gauge for tennis (optimum level of durability and power)
  • Gauge 17 (1.25 mm) is "thinner than normal" gauge for tennis.
  • Gauge 18 (1.20 mm) is the thinnest gauge for tennis.

Badminton Strings

Choosing the right badminton string for your racket is important.

It plays a big role during your badminton game and affects your performance.

How you want to string your racket depends on your style of playing badminton.

For example, stroke/ rally players use different strings compared to aggressive/ attacking players.

Usually the diameter of badminton strings available ranges from 0.66mm to 0.7mm.

Generally, thinner badminton string offer better performance but they don’t last long. Thin strings will break more often and you’ll have to spend money changing them. Therefore, in that sense, they are more costly.

Performance is very important to me and I enjoy playing good badminton games. Therefore I wouldn’t mind spending a little more on good strings for my racket.

2. String Tension

Badminton string tension is measured in “pounds”.

More pounds = Higher tension (26-28 pounds)

Fewer pounds = Lower tension (20-25 pounds)

With today’s technology in producing badminton rackets, a racket frame can potentially support string tensions of up to 30 pounds!

Of course, some world class players have their rackets strung at 30+ pounds for extreme performance. The person stringing their rackets does not usually succeed the first time. It usually takes few attempts to successfully string a 30+ pounds string tension racket.

Basic info

Do you know that frustrating feeling: you are in the middle of a tennis match and suddenly, one of the racket strings breaks? When you play tennis on a regular basis, the strings on your racket will get worn out over time. This is just natural considering the amount of strain that is put on them with each game.
